about
Hibiscus touches on personal and systemic grief in the face of loss, ecological destruction, and socio-political injustices, whilst also calling on us to look to the earth as to what to do in times of difficulty. It alludes to the rot that starts at the root of our colonized societies, leading to many of the ills we face in our current day. In many ways, the song also reflects my own personal experience of finding beauty in grief. The song got its name from watching hibiscus flowers fall from a tree and start to decay, whilst also sipping on hibiscus tea. It made me ponder on the cycles of life, and how the earth brings us sustenance even through her cycles of decay. It made me think that even when we are facing devastation ourselves, we can still choose to give back.
lyrics
Pink little leaves falling from the trees
too soon for me to revel in their glory
back to the earth, they start to decay
at least they know that now it's going to be okay
Catching sunlight, catching rain
hold onto love, let go of the pain
into the breeze
now they're free
back to the earth finality with ease
Like the days go by
Nothing can slow the tide
From the roots, a rot has set
but the pink little leaves still have no regrets
Falling ill there's a sickness in the soil
all the riches extracted like oil
so they go, go back to the earth
it's like they know that it starts and ends with her
Like the days go by
Nothing can slow the tide
From the roots, a rot has set
but the pink little leaves still have no regrets
